You are my friend, you are special
You are my friend, you're special to me
There's only one person like you
You are my friend, I like you

On the alarm clock radio this morning, I heard Bob Edwards begin a story with the words "Television personality Fred Rogers" and I immediately moaned with grief. Alas, my worst guess was true: he's left us. Fred Rogers was one of my true heroes. He's perhaps the only person on television to successfully convey the sense that he was listening to his audience. I have no doubt that I'm a better person because I grew up watching him.

The NPR story concluded with the observation that Mister Rogers central message was that it was okay to love yourself and each other. The very next story was about the war with Iraq.
